How to do Maintenance for a Computer to prolong its life
To know more about how to maintain a computer properly and correctly, both software and hardware. Here are the steps for computer maintenance as well as some easy tips:
1. Keeping eye on the Electricity input
The first thing you might want to consider is Using a Stavolt. Its function is to stabilize the electric current or UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for backup power when the power goes out.
Stavolt or UPS is very useful if the voltage in your home is not stable. So that when the power goes out, the computer that is on will not be damaged.
Also pay attention to the temperature of the computer, if necessary add a fan near the CPU so that the computer does not heat up quickly.
Maintaining the power input is one way to maintain your computer from the outside or hardware.
2. Maintenance of Computer by Cleaning Unnecessary Files
The next tip to maintain and take care of your computer is to clean up files that you no longer need, in other words, junk files.
Do regular checks on your computer’s storage space to find out files that have been piling up for too long and are not used. Because these files can affect computer performance causing it to slow down and not work optimally.
Delete unused files, and don’t forget to clean the Recycle Bin of unnecessary files.
3. Ensure Adequate Desktop airflow
Place the CPU and monitor in a place that has air vents that are wide enough for air to flow smoothly. Poor airflow can cause the computer to overheat.
The components on the computer will heat up quickly shorting its lifespan.
4. Maintenance of Computer with Antivirus Scan
The next step is to scan your computer system with an updated Antivirus. Because it s very easy for viruses to attack a system.
Install at least 1 antivirus, and always makes sure your computer antivirus stays up to date so that it can work optimally.
5. Defrag Harddisk
Apart from deleting junk files manually, you also need to defrag the hard drive. Defragmenting sorts data inside the Harddisk so that the OS and programs can easily access and writes into it.
This defragment can be performed on a scheduled basis in Windows 7 and Windows products after. But you can also defragment manually.
You only need an application called Disk Defragmenter.
The method is as follows:
- Open the Start menu
- Click All Programs
- Select Accessories
- Select System Tools
- Click Disk Defragmenter
But before you do the defragment process, you need to first analyze the hard drive that you want to defragment. Because not every hard drive needs it.
Click the Analyze button on the drive you want to check for its fragmentation level. You can do the defragment process if the fragmentation level is more than 10%. If it’s less than 10%, you can do it another time.
6. Uninstall Unused Applications or Programs
The next step, which is one of the best ways to maintain a computer, is to uninstall applications or programs that you no longer use on your computer.
It’s the same with files that you don’t use anymore, you also need to clean up old applications and programs by uninstalling or uninstalling them.
If you still keep applications or programs that you don’t use anymore, then this will hamper the hard disk’s work when it comes to reading and running programs. As a result, the hard disk workload is getting heavier and can cause damage to the hard disk.
How to uninstall all programs and applications that are not used is very easy, namely in the following way:
- Open Control Panel
- Select Programs
- Click uninstall programs
- Choose a program or application that you think is no longer needed
- Click the Uninstall button

Over time, usually, there will be dust inside the computer case. Especially if it has been used for a long time, the layer of dust that has accumulated can be quite thick.
This raises the temperature inside the case as it will interrupt the airflow. Which in turn makes it more susceptible to damage.
As much as possible periodically clean the dust from inside your PC. Use a vacuum cleaner or brush to clean it properly.
